Schmitt Museum Brewery

The Schmitt brewery has been family-owned for over a century. In 1885, master brewer Richard Schmitt acquired the brewery, which was built in 1875. In the years that followed, he extensively renovated and expanded it. Fermentation and storage cellars were added, two ice cellars were built and a steam engine was purchased. The old brewery in Singen thus became a modern commercial enterprise. However, the brewmaster's constant building activities were brought to an abrupt halt by the war and inflation. After the First World War, the brewery was expanded again and a bottle washing machine and a bottling machine were purchased so that bottled beer could also be delivered.

In the years that followed, the old machines and equipment were preserved almost unchanged and always kept in operation, so that even today Beer "like a hundred years ago" is brewed. The stirrers and wort pump are operated on brewing day by a impressive 12 hp steam engine The wort is fermented in a wooden vat and the beer is stored in oak barrels. Brewing takes place once a week, producing 2000 liters of wort. After an 8-day fermentation and a 4 to 5-week storage period, the resulting young beer is matured and the majority of the finished beer is sold in barrels (mainly to pubs) and the smaller part in bottles. The Labels are still applied by hand. Around 800 hectoliters of beer are produced every year. The Schmitt brewery has been a listed building since 1976 and is probably unique due to its almost completely preserved and fully functional technical equipment for beer production.

If you would like to taste the beer of the Schmitt brewery and relax in an idyllic setting, there is a idyllic beer garden available. There is also a small snack bar, which is available from the grill at weekends or by prior arrangement.
