In the Unstrut valley, at the Hohe Schrecke lies the rural small town of Wiehe. The Hohe Schrecke is an old forest area where a wilderness with rare flora and fauna has developed after decades of military use. The region is therefore ideal for hiking, for example to the new suspension rope bridge, or for cycling on the nearby Unstrut cycle path. Wiehe not only invites you to explore nature, but also to take a special trip around the world in miniature. The Wiehe model railroad is one of the world's largest model railroad exhibitions - on 12,000 square meters, many different trains make their rounds in detailed landscapes and towns. In summer, the family swimming pool provides suitable refreshment. The region around Wiehe has probably been settled since the Neolithic Age, later Germanic tribes lived here and in the Middle Ages the Memleben monastery cultivated wine. The monastery in the neighboring district of Donndorf also belonged to the county - today, the former monastery complex houses the Ländliche Heimvolkshochschule. Probably the most famous son of Wiehe is the historian Leopold von Ranke, founder of modern historical science. A small Ranke museum in the town hall commemorates him. The local history museum in the old school exhibits a historical classroom and other memorabilia from local history. A piece of history is also the approximately 300-year-old, now renovated Bockwindmühle in the district of Langenroda and the castle of Wiehe. Where once stood an imperial castle from the 10th century, a castle in late Renaissance style was built in the 17th century. After the Second World War, however, the castle was looted and later used as a school for a time. In the meantime, restoration has progressed so far that the castle is once again open to visitors by prior arrangement and is used for events.
