Schallenburg has always been a popular excursion destination for the inhabitants of Sömmerda. As early as 1853, the Sömmerda factory owner Kronbiegel-Collenbusch bought a farm in Schallenburg and had the restaurant "Der Felsenkeller" built there. It became one of the most popular excursion destinations for the people of Sömmerda until the Second World War.

Even today, Schallenburg offers many opportunities for hikers - whether on foot, by water or by bike. Here you can spend your leisure time in the fresh air with "child and cone" across extensive meadows along the Unstrut like hardly anywhere else.

A landing stage at the renovated bridge to Tunzenhausen also allows water hikers to take a break. From the boathouse on the Unstrut in Sömmerda, a bituminized cycle path leads directly to Schallenburg. Since the end of 2008, it has also been possible to hike and cycle further towards Wundersleben on the newly concreted cycle path along the Unstrut.

The association work in Schallenburg is characterized, among other things, by the support association for the village church of St. Cyriakus and the carnival association.
