Tourist Information Apolda

WELCOME to the city of bells!

"Appolde", first mentioned in a document in 1119, developed over the centuries into a center of crafts and trade in "an area where there are many apples". Even today, the stump of an apple tree is still part of Apolda's coat of arms.

Not only does the bell in Cologne Cathedral, the Decke Pitter, come from the traditional bell-founding town, it is also the cradle of Doberman breeding.

The formerly small farming town experienced a major boom with the construction of the Thuringian Railway through Apolda in 1846. The textile industry grew rapidly and Apolda became the most important industrial town in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach for a time. The townscape is characterized by proud buildings from the Wilhelminian era, which bear witness to the prosperity of the knitters and weavers of the time. Today, there are still several small, internationally active textile companies whose factory outlets invite you to shop. Of course, you can also find souvenirs for family and friends in the Apolda brewery!
