Johann Sebastian Bach Wedding Church
Johann Sebastian Bach Wedding Church
On 17 October 1707, a wedding party made its way from Arnstadt to Dornheim, three kilometers away. Through a large gate, they entered the enchanting little courtyard with Bach's wedding church of St. Bartholomew. Although the church was repeatedly repaired up until Johann Sebastian Bach's 250th birthday and a new organ was installed, increasing decay once again threatened the church in the 1980s. In 1996, the Freundeskreis zur Erhaltung der Traukirche von Johann Sebastian Bach in Dornheim e.V. was founded - it is thanks to this association that the church was extensively renovated. Inside the church, the epitaph of the Schwarzburg governor Christoph von Entzenbergk from 1585 and a Gothic wing altar from 1430 are particularly worth seeing. The bust of Bach in the churchyard was inaugurated in 2002. Like the Arnstadt monument, it was created by the sculptor Bernd Göbel from Halle/Saale. Even today, young couples, often admirers of the baroque composer, still come to Dornheim to get married in church. The venue is used as a concert church throughout the year, including by the Thuringian Bach Festival and the Bach Festival Arnstadt. The church can be visited by appointment by telephone.
