The climatic health resort is located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest, embedded in one of the largest forest and hiking areas in Germany between Oberhof and Wartburg Castle. The legendary ridge trail of the Thuringian Forest, the Rennsteig, forms the district border to the neighboring district for 16 km. Uniquely beautiful sights such as the climbing rock Falkenstein, the mountain lake Ebertswiese, the Spitterfall, two dams (Schmalwasser and Alte Tambacher Talsperre), the Marderbachtal, the "Steinerne Tor" and various monuments characterize our city and its surroundings.

Near Tambach, the agonizing kidney stones that forced Dr. Martin Luther to leave Schmalkalden at short notice are said to have dissolved. It is unclear whether the bumpy paths over the Rennsteig or the water from a rippling spring in the Tammichgrund brought about the healing.
